The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes alumni who, over an extended period of time and/or through a singular achievement, have achieved exemplary success in their own field, extraordinary service to Midlands Technical College, their community, state, or nation. Through their citizenship, service and caring and generous spirit, they have personified qualities and character for all Midlands Technical College students and graduates to emulate.
Midlands Technical College's 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient is Mr. Joe Johnson, President and Chief Operating Officer of Palmetto GBA. Mr. Johnson graduated from Midlands Technical College in 1983 and the University of South Carolina in 1986.
Mr. Johnson has 29 years of experience primarily in the information systems technology field with a focus on Medicare and health insurance software applications, infrastructure, and systems security. He started as a software developer at the former Policy Management Systems Corp. in Columbia, and then as an IT consultant, provided services for nine different companies in various industries before joining Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina. Palmetto GBA provides administrative and technical services to the Federal Government in support of Federal health care programs. In 2013, Palmetto GBA generated revenues of $288 million and employed 2,200 associates.
Mr. Johnson is a 24 year veteran of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and Palmetto GBA and has worked in support of the company’s Medicare contracts throughout this entire period. Mr. Johnson has held a variety of leadership positions in the company in which he successfully managed performance and growth within Palmetto GBA. Most recently, Mr. Johnson served as the Vice President of Systems and CIO for Palmetto GBA.
A Columbia, SC native, Mr. Johnson is active in the local community, coaching youth sports for 12 years and serving on several school improvement councils and the Richland 2 Gifted and Talented Foundation board. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands and Midlands Technical College Foundation.
